We are told in John 1:29 that upon seeing Jesus approaching, John the Baptist calls out, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John’s proclamation is significant as a lamb was required as a yearly sacrifice by the Jews as atonement for their sins. The blood of the lamb was also spread across the doorways of Jewish homes at the first Passover and allowed God’s judgement to “pass over” them. John’s declaration tells us who Christ is and what he has come to accomplish, to sacrifice Himself as payment for our sins, and through Christ, we are spared God’s judgement. We most often sing the words of the Agnus Dei, Latin for Lamb of God, as part of the Liturgy during Holy Communion.
