It’s fascinating to see so many hands, inspired by the Holy Spirit, working together over hundreds of years to create a beloved Christian hymn. Originally written around 1583, Jerusalem, My Happy Home is thought to have been written by a Catholic priest who based the lyrics on the texts of St. Augustine. The text inspiration comes from the Meditations of St. Augustine, which is a collection of texts from the 11th century belonging to the Monastery of St. Arnulf in Metz. The original text entitled, “Mater Hierusalem” was in fact signed by Johannes who is thought to be Jean, the abbot of Fécamp (ca. 990-1078).
