A Christmas favorite, "Stille Nacht,” or Silent Night, was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818. The story has it that Father Joseph Mohr had written the lyrics as a poem 2 years prior. Father Mohr asked the schoolmaster Franz Xaver Gruber to write a melody and a guitar accompaniment for evening mass. Why a guitar accompaniment? It is reported that a flood from a rising river had damaged the church’s organ. Repeated flooding eventually destroyed the “Silent Night Chapel,” but the hymn lives on and is sung year after year to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
