In 1870, Edward Hopper became pastor of the "Church of Sea and Land" in New York harbor. The majority of his congregants were sailors on their way to and from their work on the seas. In writing, Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me, Hopper used the language of his people to help make the connection between scripture and the life they knew well. This arrangement plays into the nautical imagery conjured by the lyrics with the slow shuffle of the drums and the monotonous rocking of the upright bass to give the "feeling" of a vessel listing to the whims of the sea.
